How many characters can you play as?
The rules say 3, but that could change soon. 
Oh, and do the animals you play as have to be the main animals on Animal Crossing?
If by that you are asking if you can be any species, you can; if you are asking about playing as a specific neighbor FROM the games, naw, this is for you to make up a villager.
